Wireles Connectivity On Campus
The wireless network can be accessed in the following buildings and should also be available outdoors in and around these buildings:
Harmony Hall Lobby
Brodhead Bistro
Gym
Ross Administration Building
Library
Student Union Building
Laboratory Classroom Building
General Classroom BuildGym
Michael Baker Building.
How to Connect to the Wireless Network
To connect to the wireless network, you'll need an 802.11b compatible wireless card and a VPN client. See the instructions below on obtaining a VPN client. The only way to connect to the Internet is through the Penn State VPN.
FOR WINDOWS XP COMPUTERS:
1. To download the Cisco VPN client, go to http://downloads.its.psu.edu. After logging in with your PSU Access ID, select "Connecting to Penn State," select "VPN-Virtual Private Network," and then select the appropriate client (Windows, Macintosh, or Linux). When you get the option or Save or Run, select "Run." Follow the on-screen instructions.
2. Once you have downloaded and installed the VPN client, you can access the Internet through the wireless network.
3. When you're sure that your wireless network adapter recognizes the wireless network, start the VPN application.
4. If your computer doesn't recognize the wireless netork, please see the documentation that came with your wireless adapter.
5. When you start the VPN application, you'll see a list of possible connections.
6. Select “ITS Wireless at Penn State Beaver” from the list.
7. You'll be asked to enter your Penn State Access Account Userid and password.
8. When you see the small closed lock icon in the screen's lower right corner, you'll know you're connected to the VPN.
9. Now you can access the Internet.
FOR WINDOWS VISTA COMPUTERS:
1. On the Start Menu, select Network option, and then select Network and Sharing Center.
2. On the left hand side, choose Set up a connection or network.
3. In the Setup a connection or network window, scroll down and select Connect to a workplace.
4. Select the first option; Use my Internet connection (VPN)
5. Input the following two pieces of information:
Internet Address: mobility.up.psu.edu
Destination Name: pennstate
6. In addition, Select Don’t connect now; just set it up so I can connect later
7. Input your Penn State Access ID and password. Then select Create.
8. Do Not select Connect Now. Select Close (lower right hand corner) instead.
9. Back under the Network and Sharing Center, select Manage Network Connections.
10. Right click on the pennstate connection and select Properties and Security.
11. Under the Security tab, choose Advanced and select Settings.
12. Data encryption should be set to Require encryption .
13. Allow these protocols should have the following checked: Unencrypted password (PAP) and Microsoft CHAP
14. Select OK.
15. A dialog box may appear regarding the selection of PAP and/or CHAP. If it appears, select Yes.
16. Under pennstate properties, select the Networking tab.
17. At the top under Type of VPN, choose the pull down option to L2TP IPsec VPN.
18. Select IPsec Setting.
19. Select: Use preshared key for authentication, and insert pennstate as the Key:
20. Select OK twice.
21. Back Under your network connection, right click the pennstate connection and create a short cut to the desktop. Be sure to close all the networking related windows. Connecting to Penn State:
22. Connect via wireless. Select the pennstate wireless network from the available wireless networks in the lower left-hand corner.
23. Double click on the pennstate connection on the desktop.
24. Insert your Penn State Access ID and password, and select Connect.
