College fair draws 1,000 to Penn State Beaver campus

 

The eighth annual Beaver County College Fair, co-sponsored by Penn State Beaver and the Beaver County Times, drew 1,000 people on Thursday, Oct. 8, in the Beaver campus gym. The event featured representatives from more than 120 colleges, universities, technical schools and the military. In addition to college recruiters, representatives from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) were available to answer questions regarding financial aid. The event is widely recognized as the premier college fair serving Beaver County students.

Lady Lions go 'green' to help environment

 

Penn State Beaver's Lady Lion basketball team recently assisted with the Independence Conservancy's Community Tire Collection program at the Brighton Township Public Works Complex in Beaver. Independence Conservancy is part of the PA Land Trust Association. The organization is the first and only land trust based in Beaver County.

Beaver will host 'Voices Against Violence' programs

 

Penn State Beaver is hosting a series of programs designed to highlight National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. The programs are free and open to the public.

 

Currently a series of flags and markers have been set up near the Student Union Building. The markers are designed to represent the large number of victims of sexual assault and domestic violence in Beaver County and northwestern Allegheny County. At noon on Wednesday, Oct. 21, a silent witness display will be set up in the Brodhead Bistro area to represent actual victims of sexual assault and domestic violence and their stories.

Beaver Valley Alumni chapter elects officers for 2009-10

 

The Beaver Valley Area chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association has elected officers for 2009-10.

 

The president is Michael Boser, recovery analyst at Coventry Health Care, and the vice president is Keith Poleti, assistant vice president/financial services manager at ESB Bank. David Smarrelli, financial advisor for GuyauxMandlerMAH Financial Group LLC, is the treasurer, and Diane McClune, director of operations at Kaneski Accounting, is the secretary. The chapter's goal is to provide support for the Penn State Beaver students and community as well as reach out into the community by engaging in a variety of activities and services that are open to the public.

Public invited to alumni chapter's Habitat program and game viewing

 

The Beaver Valley Area chapter of the Penn State Alumni Association invites the public to join the group to work with Habitat for Humanity of Beaver County at 8 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7, at a home in Ambridge, Pa.

 

Participants also are invited to join the chapter to watch Penn State's football team take on Ohio State on TV Nov. 7. The game will be shown at Zooky's in Fallston. When the game time is announced, a starting time for the festivities will be established.

 

Those interested in participating in the Habitat project or in watching the game should contact alumni chapter member Eric McIntosh at mcintoshed@upmc.edu.

 

 

Instructor in IST to speak on cloud computing

 

Penn State Beaver continues its Fall Faculty Symposia with a presentation by Abhijit Dutt, instructor in information sciences and technology. The event is free and the public is invited to attend. Dutt will discuss "cloud computing" from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11, in the lodge of the Student Union Building. Dutt holds a master's degree in computer science from the University of Tulsa and a master's degree in physics from the University of Calcutta, India.

'Expert Opinion' Big Ten Network show Oct. 21 examines life after NCAA

 

Penn State President Graham Spanier hosts the latest "Expert Opinion" show Wednesday, Oct. 21, joined by panelists who are all former college and professional athletes, to discuss the challenges and opportunities in student-athletes' lives after they depart NCAA collegiate athletics. The Medical Minute: The power of pink

 

Breast Cancer Awareness month, beautiful fall leaves and football season -- what could they possibly have in common? When you stop and think about it, there are a few similarities. First, vibrant colors come to mind: red, orange and yellow leaves tell many of us that October is here. Pink ribbons appear in stores and on television shows, and some even show up at football games. NFL players wore pink cleats and gloves during their first games in October.  Whether you're a football fan or not, it's a good time of year to remind the

women in your life to get a mammogram.
