Penn State Beaver Theatre highlights Domestic Violence Awareness Month10/26/2009 —
As part of an ongoing series of programs designed to highlight National Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October, Penn State Beaver Theatre will present three one-act plays exploring the issues of sexual assault and domestic violence. The plays are free and open to the public, although audiences should be aware of mature subject matter and language. ‘The Pirate, the Game, and the Word ‘No’’ will be presented at noon on Oct. 28 and 30, and at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 29, in the auditorium of the Beaver campus Student Union Building. The plays are directed by Carol Schafer, associate professor of theatre, integrative arts and women’s studies at Penn State Beaver.
Schafer is the recipient of the 2009 Achieving Women Award from the Penn State Commission for Women, which recognizes Penn State women who have shown leadership, supported the University’s diversity and equal opportunity efforts and contributed to human causes and public service. A Beaver faculty member since 1998, Schafer has directed and written numerous theatrical productions in the United States, including plays for Beaver campus and Crisis Center North (CCN) in Pittsburgh, a nonprofit counseling and educational resource center for victims of domestic violence in Allegheny County, where she also volunteers.
