Public invited to attend general election debate


The public is invited to attend a free general election debate from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, in the auditorium of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. Beaver campus, the Beaver County Chamber of Commerce, and Clearview Federal Credit Union are cosponsoring the event.

Admissions Office will host three programs for prospective students


In October the Penn State Beaver Admissions Office will hold three free programs for prospective students and their families. A Columbus Day Application Workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., on Monday, Oct. 11, and the "Be a Penn State Student for a Day" program will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20. A fall open house will begin at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 23, as part of the Beaver campus Welcome Weekend festivities.  All events will be held in the Student Union Building.

Beaver campus welcomes new police officer


Christina R. Hemminger has been hired as a full-time police officer at Penn State Beaver. The campus now employs six full-time officers, including Ron Schwartz, supervisor of police and safety.

Penn State laureate begins statewide tour at Beaver campus


On Tuesday, Sept. 28, Penn State Laureate Robin Becker visited Penn State Beaver as the first stop on her statewide tour of 12 Penn State campuses.  Becker, professor of English and women's studies in the College of the Liberal Arts and a nationally acclaimed, award-winning poet, is the first Penn State laureate to make a tour of University campuses.

Country rock concert free and open to the public


Penn State Beaver will present a free concert by country rock singer Natalie Stovall at 9 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 20, in the auditorium of the Student Union Building. The event is open to the public.

Human slavery and trafficking are topics of upcoming speaker


E. Benjamin Skinner will present a program on human slavery and trafficking at noon on Wednesday, Oct. 27, in the auditorium of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. The program is free and open to the public.

Student satisfaction with the Penn State experience on the rise


Results from the spring 2010 Penn State Student Satisfaction Survey have been tabulated, and across the University, students reported positive classroom and co-curricular experiences. Among respondents, 92 percent indicated they would choose to attend Penn State if starting college again and 90 percent expressed satisfaction with their formal academic experiences. In addition, students reported high levels of satisfaction with student services and with academic and co-curricular activities.

The Poet's Perspective: 'The Round Barn' examines architectural story


"The Poet's Perspective," a poetry video series by the 2010-11 Penn State Laureate Robin Becker, is scheduled to appear weekly during the fall 2010 and spring 2011 semesters on Penn State Live and in Penn State Newswires. Prior to each poem, Becker offers her thoughts about what inspired her to write the piece, then poses a question to consider. In the text and video link of "The Round Barn," Becker ponders the history of the structure and the lives of those who inhabited it.

The Medical Minute: Health care plays role in domestic abuse screening


Domestic violence is a health care problem of epidemic proportions in Pennsylvania and across the country. Nationally, nearly one-third of American women (31 percent) report being physically or sexually abused by a current or former husband or boyfriend at some point in their lives. The rates of abuse among adolescents and within lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender communities also are staggering. Screening for abuse and properly responding to domestic violence is central to an integrated health practice. Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center is screening patients and playing an essential role in that critical effort.
