Public invited to attend documentary, 'Anatomy of Hate'

Penn State Beaver invites the public to attend a free screening of the award-winning documentary, “The Anatomy of Hate - A Dialogue to Hope,” 6 p.m. on Tuesday, March 19, in the Student Union Building auditorium. At 7:30 p.m., the film’s director, Mike Ramsdell, will engage the audience in a discussion and question-and-answer session. The film contains graphic language and is for mature audiences.
 
For six years, Ramsdell worked with unprecedented access to some of the world’s most extreme, violent ideologies and participants, including the White Supremacy movement, Christian fundamentalism as an anti-gay platform, Muslim extremism, the Palestinian Intifada, Israeli settlers and soldiers, and United States military forces in Iraq.
 
“The film weaves a tapestry that reveals both the emotional and biological mechanisms which make all of us susceptible to acts and ideologies of hate,” Ramsdell said. “It demonstrates how these very same traits make us equally capable of overcoming them.”
 
The documentary juxtaposes film footage with interviews from experts in the fields of psychology, neurology, and sociology and intersperses stories of redemption told by former participants in hate ideologies.
 
“The Anatomy of Hate” was named Best Political Documentary at the Philadelphia Independent Film Festival in 2009 and won the Audience Choice Award at the Atlanta DocuFest. The documentary was also an official selection for the Boston International Film Festival, the Cinema City Film Festival, and the Saratoga Fringe Festival.

Public invited to free screening of 'Searching for Angela Shelton'

The public is invited to attend a free screening of the award-winning documentary “Searching for Angela Shelton” at 5:30 p.m. April 3, in the Student Union Building auditorium at Penn State Beaver.
 
Filmmaker Angela Shelton traveled across the country to survey other women with the same name and discovered that 24 out of 40 women had been sexually abused.
 
On her journey, Shelton meets an Angela Shelton who tracks sexual predators and lives in the same town as the filmmaker’s father, who sexually abused her and her siblings for years. The survey of women becomes a journey of self-discovery during which Shelton decides to confront her own past and her abusive father on Father’s Day. The film includes the women’s discussions of forgiveness, faith and the power of the human spirit.
 
“Searching for Angela Shelton” won numerous awards, including the 2005 Memphis International Film Festival Award for Best Documentary, the 2005 Sonoma Valley Film Festival Audience Award, the 2005 Newport Beach Film Festival Outstanding Achievement in Filmmaking Award and the 2005 Zoie Film Festival Award for Best Documentary.
 
The program will be presented by the Office of Student Activities in conjunction with the Women’s Center of Beaver County as part of Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April. The Women’s Center will also facilitate a post-screening discussion.

Admissions Office is offering FAFSA workshop

The Penn State Beaver Admissions Office is offering a free program for prospective students of all ages and their families. A FAFSA Line-by-Line Workshop will be held from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 23, in the computer lab of the Laboratory Classroom Building. Participants are asked to bring tax forms and financial documents so that staff member can guide everyone through the form, line by line. Registration for this event is required.

Continuing Education to offer course in shale exploration

The Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education will offer the on-campus course “Shale Exploration, Development and Production” from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. April 6 and May 16. The fee is $279.
 
The course uses current science and real-world experience to answer questions about all aspects of shale development, including current and future trends, business development patterns, leasing and drilling, supply chain, production and economics. The course is offered in conjunction with the Shale Training and Education Center, Penn College and Penn State Extension.

Business, computer science faculty publications are announced

The research of Talha Harcar, associate professor of business, and David R. Paoletti, assistant professor of computer science at Penn State Beaver, recently appeared in several publications.
 
Harcar was co-editor of Advances in Global Research, a book published annually by IMDA Press. The theme was “Global Competitiveness in a Time of Economic Uncertainty and Social Change: Challenges and Opportunities-Current Issues and Future Expectations.”
 
In addition, Harcar co-authored a refereed journal article, “American Consumers’ Attitudes Towards Different Airline Companies Channels: A Comparison of Transaction Methods,” which appeared in PASOS-Journal of Tourism and Cultural Heritage.
 
Harcar also co-authored three conference proceedings. “Consumer Taste Preferences for Soft Drinks: Country-of-Origin Impact” and “The Determinants of Mobile Advertising Success in Morocco" appeared in Advances in Global Management Development published by IMDA Press. “User Behavior of Peer-to-Peer Music File Sharing Technology: A Cross-National Comparison of American and Moroccan University Students” was published in the Business Research Year Book through the International Academy of Business Disciplines.
 
Paoletti was the primary author of a refereed journal articles, “Inferring the Number of Contributors to Mixed DNA Profiles,” which was published in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Computational Biology and Bioinformatics.
 
Harcar holds a doctorate in business administration, a master’s degree and two bachelor’s degrees in marketing from Istanbul University. He also holds a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Massachusetts, Dartmouth, and received the 2010 Penn State Beaver Advisory Board Faculty Excellence in Research Award.
 
Paoletti earned a doctorate in computer science from Wright State University, a master’s degree in computer science from Michigan State University and bachelor’s degrees in computer science and electrical engineering from Michigan Technological University.

Beaver Lady Lions win PSUAC Championship
The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions won the PSUAC Championship Sunday, Feb. 17 when they defeated Penn State Greater Allegheny, 67-52. The men's basketball team lost the PSUAC title by one point when they fell to Penn State York, 80-79. Both teams will play in the USCAA National Tournament to be held next week at Penn State Fayette.

Students encouraged to apply for Buick Achievers Scholarship

Current or prospective Penn State students majoring, or planning to major, in engineering, technology, design, or business, with an interest in the auto industry, are encouraged to apply for the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program funded by the GM Foundation.
 
The program is designed to assist those who achieve in and out of the classroom, yet are unable to attend college without financial assistance. This national scholarship program awards 100 scholarships annually, each up to $25,000, and also offers 1,000 annual scholarships, each at $2,000.

Ceramicist Chris Staley, the 2012-13 Penn State Laureate and distinguished professor of art at the University, is discussing topics related to creativity and the intersection between art and life in a series of videos to be shared during the 2012-13 academic year, aiming to expand people's ideas on art and serve as a catalyst for further conversation.
 
Locations will range from Staley's studio to horse stables to a football field, and the videos will include interviews with Penn State sports coaches and other distinguished members of the University community. The three- to four-minute videos, co-produced by College of Arts and Architecture staff member Cody Goddard, will appear weekly during the 2012-13 academic year on Penn State Live and in Penn State Newswires.

The Medical Minute: A simple guide to heart-healthy eating

Eating certain foods can increase your risk for heart disease, and though it is often difficult to change dietary habits, eating “heart healthy” is very important for your long-term health. According to a diet and health study from the National Institutes of Health, there is growing evidence that eating lots of fruits, vegetables, olive oil and fish offer some level of protection from health problems. Dr. Jason Fragin, cardiologist at Penn State Hershey Heart and Vascular Institute in State College, offers tips to get started, or simply fine tune, a heart-healthy diet.
 
-- Control portion sizes – Keep track of the number of servings you eat. Eating until you feel stuffed can lead to eating more calories, fat and cholesterol than necessary. Eat until you are not hungry, not until you feel full.
 
-- Eat more fruits and vegetables – Both are good sources of vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. Aim for fresh or frozen options and/or canned fruit packed in juice or water (not with sugar added or in heavy syrup).
 
-- Eat whole grains – Whole grains are good sources of fiber and nutrients which help regulate blood pressure and heart health. Healthy examples include whole grain couscous, quinoa and barley, steel-cut oatmeal, ground flaxseed or high fiber cereal. Avoid white, refined flour-based foods.
 
-- Limit unhealthy fats and cholesterol – Avoiding saturated and trans fats helps reduce your risk of coronary artery disease. Limit the amount of solid fats (butter, margarine and shortening) you add when cooking and instead use olive or canola oil. Avoid foods with “partially hydrogenated oil” on the label.
 
-- Choose low-fat proteins – Eating lean meat, poultry, fish, low-fat dairy products and egg whites are great sources of protein. Salmon is rich is omega-3 fatty acid, which lowers blood fats called triglycerides.
 
-- Reduce sodium intake – To avoid high blood pressure, the Department of Agriculture recommends that healthy adults have no more than a teaspoon of sodium per day. Reduce the amount of salt you add to food at the table or while cooking.
 
"Being more heart health conscious with your diet helps both with primary prevention – to avoid heart disease – and secondary prevention – for those who seek to minimize complications from known heart disease," said Fragin.
