Lady Lions Lose First Game in USCAA National Championship
On Thursday, Feb. 28 the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions basketball team lost its first game in the USCAA National Championship when they were defeated by Spalding University, 77-45. Beaver received a #3 seed and a first round bye for the championship now underway in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
Beaver freshman Heather Sandusky (New Brighton High School / New Brighton, PA) opened the scoring when she connected on her first 3-point attempt. During most of the first half, the score was close with Beaver taking the lead only to have Spalding reclaim it. At halftime Spalding had a 7-point lead.
Spalding dominated the second half as they built a 20-point lead in the first five minutes. Beaver was able to cut the lead to 14 with ten minutes left on the clock, but Spalding outscored the Lady Lions by 16 points in the final ten minutes to earn the victory.
The Lady Lions were led in scoring by Sandusky and freshman Jasmine Green (Orange, NJ), each of whom threw in 10 points. Green also grabbed 8 rebounds. Junior Sam Neely (Northgate High School / Pittsburgh, PA) had 9 points off the bench.
The defeat dropped Beaver to the loser bracket of the tournament where they'll fight for a fifth-place finish. The Lady Lions next game is 8 a.m. Central Time (9 a.m. Eastern Time), Friday, Feb 29 with their opponent to be determined.
