Moon High School Wins Penn State Beaver Math Competion
Davis’ Dream Team, a math team from Moon High School, was the winner of the Second Annual Penn State Beaver Math Competition held Tuesday, March 4 at the campus. Team members were seniors Stephanie Jackson, Kevin Tomb, Aaron Hassett, and Brandon McIntyre, all of Moon Township. Each winner is eligible to receive a freshman-only, Blue and White Scholarship for $1,000 to attend Beaver campus. Team sponsor was gifted coordinator Judy Shuster.
Sixteen teams of students from ten area high schools competed in the event, which drew eighty students, grades nine through twelve, from Aliquippa, Ambridge, Avonworth, Beaver County Christian School, Center, Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, Monaca, Moon, Riverside, and Rochester high schools. Competition format involved two rounds of math problems to be solved without the aid of a calculator. Each team member worked individually on the problems, and the scores of all five team members were combined to form the final team score.
Event organizers were Chris Wu, professor of mathematics at Beaver campus, Robert Sulman, instructor in mathematics, and Dan Pinchot, director of enrollment. The competition is designed to promote mathematics to students who may be considering a science or engineering-related career or for those who simply enjoy mathematics. Any student with a solid background of ninth-grade mathematics was eligible to participate.
