Softball Team Projected to Finish No.1 in PSUAC

The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team has been projected to finish first in the PSUAC Pre-season Coaches Poll. Beaver is coming off a 2007 season in which it finished 31-6 overall and 19-1 in the PSUAC. The team was the champion when it closed its regular season, but fell to Penn College in the conference championship.

Many of Beaver's Lady Lions softball team members received pre-season recognition as well. Sophomore Jamie Clouse (Laurel High School), sophomore Chelsea Brownlee (Avella High School) and senior Becky Garcia (Riverside High School) were all named to the First Team Pre-season All-Conference Team. Sophomore Sam Neely (Northgate High School) and sophomore Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) received honorable nention.

Clouse, a 2007 USCAA All-American and PSUAC All-Conference selection, returns after leading the PSUAC in batting average with .545 as well as RBIs at 51. Garcia was named to the PSUAC All-Conference Team in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Brownlee returned to the team after a strong 2007 season on the mound as well as at the plate. Neely was named to the PSUAC All-Conference Team a year ago and also received a USCAA Honorable Mention All-American.

Also receiving recognition were junior Melissa Swoager (South Side High School), Jessica McWilliams (Butler High School), Taylor Rzeczkowski (Highlands High School) and Kayla Chambers (South Side High School). All were named Pre-Season Newcomer of the Year. Chambers and McWilliams are freshman and Rzeczkowski and Swoager are juniors.
