Winners of 2008 Beaver County Spelling Championship Announced
On Saturday, April 13 Megan Zagorski, 14, won the Beaver County Spelling Championship co-sponsored by the Beaver County Times and Penn State Beaver and held in the Beaver campus auditorium, Student Union Building.
Megan, the daughter of Keith and Liz Zagorski of Beaver, is an eighth grade student at Beaver Area Middle School. She correctly spelled ‘accommodate’ to win the championship over twenty competitors. She received a $1,500 scholarship to Penn State Beaver, $250, and a trophy. The event’s traveling plaque will be presented to Megan’s school.
Bridget Haas, 14, an eighth grade student from Western Beaver Junior High School, was first runner-up and received a $1,000 scholarship to Penn State Beaver, $150, and a trophy. She is the daughter of Bill and Karen Haas of Industry.
Head judge was Dr. Angela Fishman, instructor in mathematics and coordinator for the Center for Academic Achievement at Beaver campus. Other judges were Carleen Dinello, lecturer in English at Beaver campus, and Bill Vidonic, staff writer for The Times. Pronouncer was Stacy Koutoulakis, campus lecturer in English, and moderator was Marsha Keefer, public affairs editor, Beaver County Times.
