Penn State Beaver Undergraduate Research Fair Winners Announced

Thirteen students participated in the Eighth Annual Penn State Beaver Undergraduate Research Fair held recently on campus. The students discussed their research during oral and / or poster presentations and were required to work with a faculty mentor in researching their topic and preparing a presentation.

Winners:

Oral Presentation – First Place:
Peter Ng, sophomore science major, Queens, NY

Topic: The synthesis of a potential chemotherapy agent: 2, 3-diphenyl Thiazolidin-4-one adduct of iron (III) tetrachloride.

Faculty mentor: Dr. Michael Hay, associate professor of chemistry

Oral Presentation – Second Place:
Abdul Al-Nakhli, senior communications major, New Brighton

Topic: Unmasking a Hero: Culture and Gender among Modern-Day Heroes

Faculty mentors: Dr. John Chapin, associate professor of communications, and Ms. Courtney Young, reference  librarian / assistant professor of women’s studies

Shannon Pridgen, senior applied psychology major, Waynesboro

Topic: Postnatal Depression: A literature review

Faculty mentor: Dr. Minhnoi Wroble Biglan, assistant professor of psychology

Poster Presentation – Second Place:
Kyung-Min Kim, freshman liberal arts major, Seoul, Korea and Kylee Weaver, sophomore applied psychology major, Beaver Falls

Topic: The Gap: Gender Conflicts in Generations

Faculty mentor: Dr. Clare Conry-Murray, assistant professor of psychology
