Eighth-grader wins annual Beaver County Spelling Championship

Jason Schuchardt, an eighth-grade student from Sewickley Academy, won the 26th annual Beaver County Spelling Championship held Saturday, March 6, at Penn State Beaver. The event is cosponsored by the Beaver County Times and Beaver campus.

Schuchardt spelled the words “quadruped” and “cosmopolitan” correctly to win the competition after competing against Katie Mihelarakis, an eighth-grader from Rhema Christian School, in several rounds.

Nineteen students from area schools participated in the competition. All participants received medals for representing their respective schools.

Schuchardt received a $1,500 scholarship to Penn State Beaver, $250, and a grand champion trophy. Mihelarakis received a $1,000 scholarship to Penn State Beaver, $150, and a silver trophy.

In addition to Sewickley Academy and Rhema Christian School, other participating schools were St. James Catholic School, Freedom Area Middle School, Beaver Falls Area Middle School, Cornell Junior High School, Midland Elementary/Middle School, St. John the Baptist Catholic School, Beaver Area Middle School, Rochester Area Junior High School, Highland Middle School, Ambridge Area Junior High School, Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic School, West Allegheny Middle School, Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School, Monaca Junior High School, Hopewell Memorial Junior High School, and Divine Mercy Academy.

Welcoming remarks were delivered by Penn State Beaver Chancellor Gary B. Keefer and Tom Bickert, managing editor for the Beaver County Times. Head judge was Angela Fishman, instructor in mathematics and coordinator for the Beaver campus Center for Academic Achievement. Other judges were Carleen Dinello, senior instructor in reading and English and assistant director of academic affairs at Beaver, and Bill Vidonic, a Beaver campus alumnus and staff writer for the Beaver County Times. Prounouncer was Stacy Koutoulakis, lecturer in English at Beaver, and moderator was Marsha Keefer, public affairs editor for the Beaver County Times.
