Lady Lions continue community outreach with Girls Hope
The Labor Day holiday didn’t deter the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions basketball team as they continued their community service and outreach by volunteering to work at Girls Hope of Pittsburgh on Sunday, Sept. 5. Girls Hope, a residential facility in Baden, Pa., is a nonprofit, nondenominational organization designed to help girls who are victims of neglect or poverty, yet capable of academic achievement. Under the direction of Bridget Cook, community resource coordinator for Girls Hope, the Lady Lions swept, mopped, dusted, polished and scrubbed various rooms in the facility.
"It’s important for our program to be involved with the community and give back," Head Coach Bert DeSalvo said. "Our student-athletes are fortunate to have the opportunity to earn a college degree and they understand that not everyone has the advantages they have. In addition, we hope to inspire others by showing we care about others."
The Lady Lions basketball team began this year’s community service outreach effort when they raised $240 for the Women’s Center of Beaver County by participating in the Run for Life 5K on Aug. 28.
Girls Hope, which serves girls ages 10 to 18, helps young women to realize their self worth and leadership potential by providing value-centered, family-like homes and a quality education. Girls Hope provides two stable, family-like homes, each accommodating eight full-time residents, while also serving as a home base for several Girls Hope college students. Founded in 1990, the Baden facility was the first Girls Hope established in the United States and has served as a model for developing other programs across the country.
This year the Lady Lions, who have performed community service projects in the past, will focus on women’s programs. "Our team’s co-captain, Noelle Miloszewski, has taken the reins this year and has decided to focus on women's programs in our outreach efforts," DeSalvo said. "Our goal is to reach as many women's organizations as possible during the academic year."
