Penn State Beaver hosts Career Week
The Penn State Beaver Office of Career Services will host Career Week, March 14-18. Students, faculty, staff, alumni, and Advisory Board members will participate in a series of workshops and interviews designed to educate and prepare students seeking current and future employment.
‘Career Development 101’ will be held at noon, Monday, March 14 in room 15, Student Union Building and will feature an open forum session for students and career counselors to cover a variety of topics, including resumes, career development, and internships.
‘Professional Resume Reviews’ will take place from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 15 in the Special Events Room, Student Union Building. Professionals and volunteers from a wide variety of fields will provide feedback to students about resumes. The students will be able to visit with each professional to receive one-on-one advice and will have the opportunity to practice a ’30-second elevator speech.’
A workshop titled ‘Dress for Success’ will be held at noon, Wednesday, March 16 in the Brodhead Bistro on campus. Student will learn about the importance of appropriate attire as it relates to both interviews and working business situations. In addition, students will serve as guest models to feature what should and shouldn’t be worn in professional settings.
The ‘Networking and Meal Interview Etiquette Workshop’ will begin at 5:30 p.m, Wednesday, March 16 in the Lodge, Student Union Building. Penn State alumni, Advisory Board members, and prospective employers will join the students for hors d'oeuvres and networking followed by dinner. Guest presenter for the evening will be Susan Timko who will facilitate a workshop on ‘The Meal Interview: Eat, Drink, and Make a Good Impression, Plus Business Etiquette Tips.’ Timko is associate director of career services for the master’s programs in information systems management and information security policy and management at Carnegie Mellon University. The event is sponsored in part with funding from the Student Activity Fee.
‘Speed Interviewing’ will be held from noon to 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 17 in room 16, Student Union Building. The format will allow Advisory Board members, campus friends, and prospective employers to serve as interviewers, meet for 8 to 10 minutes with students, and provide feedback about first impressions. The event serves as both a training and employment opportunity for students as several organizations are engaged in hiring new staff.
‘Get Connected: Networking for a Linked-in Penn State Beaver Student’ will be held at noon, Friday, March 18 in the Brodhead Bistro on campus. The programming will explain the importance of networking with alumni and other prospective employers and will offer tips on how to network successfully.
