Tomaselli named captain of Lady Lions basketball team
Brittany Tomaselli, a Penn State Beaver sophomore education major from East Liverpool, Ohio, has been named captain of the 2011-2012 Lady Lions basketball team.
The announcement was made recently by Lady Lions head coach Bert DeSalvo, supervisor of athletic, intramural and recreational sports and assistant athletic director.
Tomaselli is the team’s fourth captain under DeSalvo’s guidance since he re-established the women’s basketball program at Beaver in 2007 after an absence of more than twenty years. DeSalvo noted that Tomaselli has been a ‘silent’ captain for the team, and he began to prepare her for this new role midway through the year.
‘Brittany will do a fantastic job for the program,’ DeSalvo said. ‘I’m very excited for her to become our leader both on the floor and in the locker room. Her role was vastly elevated last season, and she proved invaluable to the team. Most importantly, all of the women respect her and rely on her. That type of trust is essential for any great leader.’
‘I’m excited to help lead the program in the upcoming seasons,’ Tomaselli said. ‘I thank Coach DeSalvo and the coaching staff for trusting me with this honor. This is a responsibility that I’m looking forward to. I hope I can help the incoming freshman get adjusted to our system seamlessly. The seniors have left a lasting legacy for the program.’
Tomaselli said the team will count on newcomers as well as returning members to uphold the tradition begun four years ago, but also to create a history and memories of their own.
This season, the 5-foot-2 point guard played in all 31 games for the Lady Lions. She averaged 24 minutes, 7.0 points, 2.8 rebounds and 1.8 assists per game. The Lady Lions finished 23-8 overall, include 14-0 in the PSUAC, and qualified to compete in the USCAA Tournament.
