Beaver will offer STEM-related summer camps for youth

5/3/2011 —

The Penn State Beaver Office of Continuing Education will offer four summer camps related to the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) initiative. The nation-wide emphasis on STEM is designed to provide children and adults with an increased understanding of career and development opportunities in the science and math fields.

The Continuing Education will offer these STEM-related camps:

Crime Scene Investigation, 9 a.m. to noon, July 11 to 15, ages 9-13
Campers become investigators involved in a simulated crime scene. Playing roles of forensic scientists and detectives, the students will work in cooperative teams, using chemistry and biology skills as well as forensic techniques to collect, analyze, and interpret evidence discovered at the scene.

Rockets Away, 9 a.m. to noon, July 18 to 22, ages 9-14
Students will explore the basics of rocketry through a variety of hands-on experiments, including designing, constructing, and launching model rocket creation. In addition, participants will be introduced to rocket science and space flight through scientific inquiry and introductory physics.

Robotics, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 18 to 22, ages 11 and up
Using a Lego Mindstorms Robotics Invention Kit, teams of campers will design and build robots that will use RCX programming code, a powerful but simple code used in robotics. Used by Lego, this programming language was developed in collaboration with the MIT Media Lab. At the end of the course, teams will compete in a fun obstacle course competition to test the robots they've built.

Digital Video and Movie Production, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., July 18 to 22, ages 11 and up
Campers will be ‘hands-on’ in learning the basics of movie production, including storyboarding, types of video equipment and software required, composition of shots, camera angles, and how to do basic movie editing using Microsoft Movie Maker. Campers will write, direct, shoot, and edit a short film using techniques learned in class.
