‘The Kite Runner’ kicks off Global Film Series on campus

9/16/2011 —

The public is invited to attend a free screening of ‘The Kite Runner,’ 6:00 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 21 in the auditorium of the Penn State Beaver Student Union Building. An open discussion with the audience will follow the film.

The award-winning film from 2007 is based on author Khaled Hosseini’s debut novel of the same name. The book and film tell the story of Amir, a young boy from the Wazir Akbar Khan district of Kabul, who befriends Hassan, the son of his father's Hazara servant. The story is set against a backdrop of tumultuous events, from the fall of Afghanistan's monarchy through the Soviet invasion, the mass exodus of refugees to Pakistan and the United States, and the rise of the Taliban regime.

The film was nominated for numerous awards by the Academy Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, the Broadcast Film Critics Association, World Soundtrack Awards, Christopher Awards, and Young Artists Awards, among other.

This free screening and discussion are part of the Penn State Beaver Diversity Committee’s 2011-2012 Global Film Series which is designed to expand participants’ world view as well as initiate discussion about global themes – politics, religion, morality, culture, racism - to aid in deepening understanding of other cultures.
