New endowed scholarship honors Beaver Chancellor Gary Keefer
Several Penn State Beaver staff, alumni and friends have established the Chancellor Gary B. Keefer Endowment. The announcement of the scholarship, with initial gifts totaling $50,000, was made recently at an on-campus reception honoring Keefer’s more than 16 years of service as Beaver’s longest-standing chancellor.
Keefer has been chancellor (formerly campus executive officer) since 1997, prior to which he served as Beaver’s director of academic affairs from 1996 to 1997.
“Just before the reception, I found my wife, Paula, and Diana Patterson, our campus director of development, waiting for me in my office,” Keefer said. “Diana informed Paula and me that several people had created an endowed scholarship in my name. I was very surprised and very moved.”
Keefer is the fifth person to lead Beaver campus since it opened its doors in fall 1965.
Consideration for the Keefer scholarship will be given to all sophomore, junior and senior full-time Beaver campus students who have achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
“Having been a first generation student at Penn State Fayette many years ago,” Keefer said, “I know the valuable role the campuses play in educating people from local regions and around the world. I’ve been blessed to work with an extremely talented faculty and staff throughout my time here at Beaver, which makes my job very enjoyable and fulfilling.”
Prior to coming to Beaver campus, Keefer worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Omaha Campus, for 16 years as interim associate dean, College of Engineering and Technology; vice chairman, Department of Civil Engineering; and associate professor and assistant professor, Department of Civil Engineering.
Keefer holds a doctorate in environmental engineering, and a master’s degree and bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from West Virginia University.
The public is invited to continue to build the Keefer Endowment through gifts that can be made by contacting Patterson at email@example.com or 724-773-3558.
The Keefer Endowment will help Penn State Beaver reach its goals in For the Future: The Campaign for Penn State Students, a University-wide fundraising effort directed toward a shared vision of Penn State as the most comprehensive, student-centered research university in America. The University is engaging Penn State's alumni and friends as partners in achieving six key objectives: ensuring student access and opportunity, enhancing honors education, enriching the student experience, building faculty strength and capacity, fostering discovery and creativity, and sustaining the University's tradition of quality. The For the Future campaign is the most ambitious effort of its kind in Penn State's history, with the goal of securing $2 billion by 2014.
