Lady Lions Split in Day 1 of USCAA Pool Play
The Penn State Beaver Lady Lions opened the USCAA tournament on the right foot. In game one, the women drew Southern Virginia University.
Beaver would score first, scoring one in the top of the third. Southern Virginia would tie it in the bottom of the third, scoring one of their own. Beaver would score the deciding runs in the fifth, scoring twice to take a 3-1 lead. Freshman Kayla Chambers (South Side High School) would pitch lights out, and earn the 3-1 win. Chambers would pitch seven innings, giving up four hits, walking two and striking out four. Senior Brittany Moore (Hopewell High School) would doube in the win. Sophomore's Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) and Jamie Clouse (Laurel High School) would have RBI singles in the fifth.
In game two, Beaver would take on defendng National Champs, St. Mary of the woods. Beaver would strike first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. SMWwould score twice as well in the bottom of the third, to tie the game 2-2. SMW would score one in the fourth and one in the fifth, and would go on to win 4-2. Junior Sam Neely (Northgate High School) pitched 4 innings, giving up 4 hits, and walking 2 along the way. Offensivley, Sophomore Amanda Moore (Hopewell High School) would double in the victory.
Game 3 with Spalding University has been post poned until tomorrow (Saturday) at 11 a.m. The women need a victory to qualify for the national Title double elimination tournaenl With a loss, they will qualiy for the cosolation.
Three Lady Lions Honored by United States Collegiate Athletic Association
Decatur, Il- Three Lady Lions were honored at the 2008 USCAA Softball Banquet that kicks off the annual national tournament. Sophmores Jamie Clouse (Laurel High School) and Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) were named to the 2008 USCAA Softball All-American team. Junior Melissa Swoager (South Side High School) was named as an Honorable Mention.
This is the second time in her two year career that Clouse has been honored by the USCAA as an All-American. Jamie batted .426 with 38 runs score, 33 Runs Batted in and 52 hits. Clouse lead the team and the USCAA in hits and doubles (13) in 38 games. Clouse is also a two time PSUAC All-Conference Selection.
Verrico batted .450, driving in 44 runs on 50 hits.In 38 games played, Verrico had 10 doubles. Verrico lead the team and the USCAA in RBI's, and was second in the USCAA in hits and third in doubles. Verrico was named to the PSUAC All-Conference team.
Swoager batted .410, scoring 48 runs, which lead the USCAA, in 38 games. Melissa had 22 RBI's and was fifth in the USCAA with 47 hits. Swoager was also named to the PSUAC All-Conference team.
Senior Becky Garcia (Riverside High School) and Sophomore Chelsea Brownlee (Avella High School) were also recognized by the PSUAC. Garcia was named 1st team All-Conference and Brownlee was named as an honorable mention.
Penn State Beaver Baseball & Softball Teams Wrap up Another Successful Season with Trip to USCAA Tournament
The Penn State Beaver baseball and softball teams continued their post-season, accepting their invitation to play in the USCAA National Tournament in both sports. The Lady lions took first place in the regular season with a record of 19-1 in the PSUAC. Last week they headed to Williamsport for the tournament, but Beaver fell to Penn State Greater Allegheny and Penn State Hazleton the first day, finishing fourth overall in the tournament with a record of 19-3. The men went into the tournament with a record of 16-4 in the PSUAC. The lions won their first game Wednesday morning against Penn State Brandywine, but fell against Penn College later that night. Thursday, the boys faced Penn State Brandywine once again and prevailed, knocking Brandywine out of the competition. The men needed to defeat Penn College twice to remain the conference champions, but they failed to do so and place 2nd in the conference with a record of 18-6.
For the USCAA National tournament, the women will travel to Decatur, Illinois as the 6th seed to face seven other teams from around the nation to become number one. On the first day of competition, Friday, May 9th, Beaver is scheduled to play Southern Virginia University at 9AM, Saint Mary of the Woods at 1PM, and Spalding University at 5PM in the pool play format. This will determine the seeding and bracket for the following day. The men’s baseball team will travel to Hampton, Virginia next week as the number one seed. The tournament is double elimination where they will face Robert Morris of Springfield their first game on Tuesday, May 13th at 1PM.
With a great year behind them, came many individual awards for both teams. For the women’s softball team Sophomores Catcher Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) and third base Jamie Clouse (Laurel High School), Junior short stop Melissa Swoager (South Side High School), and Senior second basemen Becky Garcia (Riverside High School) were all named PSUAC All Conference First-team. Sophomore pitcher Chelsea Brownlee (Avella High School) was named honorable mention PSUAC All-Conference Team. For the men’s baseball team Sophomores Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) and Ryan Raraigh (Riverside High School), and Senior Pat Ringel (Sto Rox High School) were named PSUAC All-Conference first team. Junior Jeff Trojan (Rochester High School) and Freshman Huston Lorenzo (Miami, FL) were named Honorable Mentions.
Lady Lions Drop Two to Grove City College
On Friday, May 2 the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team lost a doubleheader at home against Grove City College, 8-0 and 2-0. Beaver played well, but one bad inning in game one and two errors in game two set the team back.
In game one, Beaver score first with one in the third. The Lady Lions followed that with three runs in the fifth to take a
4-0 lead.
Freshman Kayla Chambers (South Side High School) pitched six solid innings, giving up four hits, walking one, and striking out six. Junion Sam Neely came in for the save, but four errors hurt the Lady Lions as Grove City scored eight in the top of the seventh.
Offensively, the Lady Lions pounded out twelve hits led by sophomores Jamie Clouse (Laurel High School) and Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) and senior Becky Garcia (Riverside High School), all with three hits each.
In game two, Grove City scored one in the fourth inning and one in the sixth to take the win. Beaver sophomore Chelsea Brownlee (Avella High School) pitched six strong innings, giving up seven hits, walking one, and striking out two. Garcia doubled in the loss.
The Lady Lions are now 23-22 overall. The USCAA national tournament is up next for the Lady Lions and begins at 9 a.m., Friday, May 9 in Decatur, Illinois.
Lions Finished Second in PSUAC Tournament
The Penn State Beaver Nittany Lions baseball entered the PSUAC Championship Tournament as the #2 seed, but ended in second place, falling to their tournament host, the Penn College Wildcats, who took this year's title. The Lions defeated Penn State Brandywine, 6-2 and 4-1, but lost to Penn College, 3-2 and 3-1.
On Wednesday, April 30, the Lions took on #3 seed Brandywine in game one and scored first, plating one in the first inning. Beaver built the lead to 4-0, scoring three in the third. Brandywine scored one in the sixth, but Beaver added one in the sixth to take the win.
Senior Pat Ringel (Sto-Rox High School) pitched seven innings, giving up seven hits, walking none, and striking out four to earn the win. Offensively, Ringel, sophomore Joe Scherer (Quaker Valley High School), and Nate Stonfer (Ambridge High School) each had two hits. Ringel added a triple and scored two runs while Scherer had a 2 RBI triple in the three-run third.
In game two, the winner's bracket game, Beaver took on Penn College. The Lions and the Wild Cats traded runs in the first and fourth innings to push the game into extra innings wth the score tied, 2-2. Penn College took the game in the eighth, though, winning on a Texas leaguer in the final at bat.
Sophomore Greg Frederick (Quaker Valley High School) pitched all eight innings, giving up six hits, walking four, and striking out twelve. Offensively, Scherer and Ringel led the way in the loss. Scherer had two hits and an RBI while Ringel had one hit and one RBI and stole two bases.
On Thursday, May 1, Beaver took on Brandywine again for a chance to move to the championship. Beaver built a 4-0 lead, scoring two in the second and one in the third and fourth. Brandywine scored a meaningless run in the fifth, and Beaver held on for a 4-1 victory.
Freshman Jake Ellis (Seneca Valley High School) pitched seven innings, scattering seven hits and six walks while striking out two on his way to the victory. Once again, Scherer led the way offensively with three hits and a run. Freshman Huston Lorenzo (Miami, Fl) added two hits and a run scored.
In the championship game, Beaver went up again against the Wildcats again and, once again, fell short. The Penn College scored two in the bottom of the second to build a 2-0 lead. Beaver answered, cutting the lead in half and plating one in the fourth. The Wildcats got the run back in the bottom of the inning. Beaver rallied in the seventh but came up empty and lost, 3-1. Scherer pitched six strong innings, scattering seven hits, walking none, and striking out two. Beaver collected five hits in the loss, led by a double by Frederick.
The USCAA National Tournament is up next for the Nittany Lions. The tournament, hosted by The Apprentice School, begins May 13 in Hampton, Virginia. Beaver is the #1 seed and will take on #8 seed Robert Morris College Springfield, Illinois in the first round.
Beaver Women Fall Twice in PSUAC Tournament
Wednesday, April 30 should have been a good day for the Penn State Beaver Lady Lions softball team when they entered the PSUAC Tournament in Williamsport as the #1 seed at the end of their regular season, 19-1. But victory escaped them twice when they lost two games, 8-4 and 5-4.
In game one, Beaver took on #4 seed Penn State Greater Allegheny. They were ready for action, but Beaver wasn't. Greater Allegheny scored one in the top of the first. Beaver tied it at one when they scored in the bottom of the third. Greater Allegheny went on to score two in the fourth and two in the fifth for a 5-1 lead. Beaver scored one in the fifth to get within three, but Greater Allegheny soared past them, scoring three in the sixth and taking the win.
Junior Sam Neely (Northgate High School) pitched seven innings, scattering twelve hits, walking two, and striking out six. Errors made the difference for Beaver when they committed eight and gave away six unearned runs. Offensively, sophomore Melissa Swoager (South Side High School) finished with two hits.
In the Loser's Bracket game, Beaver went up against Penn State Hazleton, jumping out to a 4-0 lead by scoring four in the bottom of the first inning. Hazleton tied it in the fourth, however, by scoring four off of three Beaver errors. Hazleton took the lead in the fifth, scoring another unearned run for a 5-4 lead.
Freshman Kayla Chambers (South Side High School) pitched five strong innings, giving up ten hits, walking two, and striking out six. Offensively, Alonna Verrico (Rochester High School) finished with three hits while senior Becky Garcia and freshman Jessica McWilliams each had two hits.
